Eco Council

Who are we?

Eco Council is a team of Year 3, 4, 5 and 6 pupils who are interested in sustainability and the environment. Eco Council meets regularly to engage in projects and share ideas about how to make our school more sustainable and aware of environmental issues.

How do you become an Eco Councillor?

In order to become an Eco Councillor, applicants write a letter to current Eco Council members explaining why they think they should be selected for Eco Council and what knowledge, skills and qualities they can bring to the role. Eco Council then elects the most suitable candidates.

How do people know who is an Eco Council Member?

Eco Councillors wear a badge made of recycled materials to show they are an Eco Council Member.

What do Eco Council do?

Eco Council work together throughout the year on projects which cover the 7 principles of eco-schools, to try and become a more environmentally friendly and sustainable school. We engage in projects both as an Eco Council and those which involve the whole school and local community for maximum impact.

Our projects so far have included:

Bird Feeders

Eco Council make bird feeders from recycled materials and refill them regularly throughout the winter and spring to ensure birds have sufficient food

WOW walk to school project

Eco Councillors have worked with Ilkley Active Travel Hub and Living Streets, a charity aimed at getting more people to walk, to introduce an active travel to school scheme. People who travel by foot, scooter or bike once a week, earn a special badge each month. For children who come by car, there is a map that shows where you can ‘park and stride’ to help everyone get involved.

Litter Picking

Eco Councillors regularly undertake litter picks around the school grounds to ensure that the grounds are not only clean for users but that wildlife is not harmed by any litter.

Raising awareness

Eco Council lead regular assemblies to raise awareness of issues and inform pupils of the work they are undertaking.

Energy

Eco Council have ensured that classrooms in school have posters and signs reminding / pupils and staff to turn off electrical devices when not in use.
